Notice of product recall:
Battery packs for Hitachi Cable wireless IP phones
(Wireless IP 5000/5000A/5000E/5000E-A, WIP 5000)

To: Users of Hitachi Cable wireless IP phones

Hitachi Cable, Ltd. is contacting buyers of its wireless IP phones directly to notify them of a free battery pack replacement program applicable to battery packs in certain phones. This recall emerges from concerns about potential leaks of electrolytic solution resulting from deterioration of battery pack seals over time. To increase the proportion of affected battery packs collected and to ensure customer safety, Hitachi Cable plans to increase awareness of the recall through its website.
We ask that customers with the affected battery packs (described under "1" below) contact us using the contact information given under "3" below to have the battery packs replaced at no charge.
Item 2 below describes the potential risks associated with electrolytic solution leaks.

1. Affected battery packs

The battery packs affected have serial numbers beginning with "WE" and were provided with the wireless IP phones listed below, or sold separately during the period from December 2003 to August 2006.

Affected wireless IP phone models:

  • Wireless IP 5000/5000A/5000E/5000E-A (including formerly used model number WIP 5000)

How to check the serial number of your battery pack:

Remove the battery pack from the wireless IP phone and check the serial no. printed on the battery pack's label.

2. Potential risks associated with electrolytic solution leaks

Direct contact with electrolytic solutions may cause sores on the skin. If contact occurs, immediately wash the affected area with running water. Allowing electrolytic solution to remain on your skin may lead to serious health consequences. (If the electrolytic solution enters your eyes, flush with plenty of water to remove the solution, then seek medical attention.)

In addition, leaked electrolytic solution may short the circuitry inside the battery pack, causing the battery pack to overheat. If your phone's battery pack feels unusually warm, suspend use immediately.

Although no actual cases have been reported of battery packs exploding or catching fire, such events cannot be ruled out if a customer continues to use a battery pack that is leaking electrolytic solution or exhibits a sudden increase in temperature.
